Troides amphrysus ruficollis (Butler)

This is a very large butterfly and is among the showiest denizens of the forested path. It has a very lofty habit of flying and hovering over canopies of tall trees, sometimes coming down to medium height trees in flowers but it will never puddle. If you're lucky, they can be seen earlier part of the morning sunning themselves on leaves of tall bushes and that's when you will have a window of opportunity to snap a few photos. They are easily spooked even at a distance.

An even larger female fluttered by @ 11:14. T. amphrysus and T. cuneifer has a signature patch of pale yellow or white markings on its forewing apex, even in the males and it is clearly visible in flight.

This male was perching repeatedly, after having flew off a few times from me approaching, on the same shady spot by a stream. 29 September 2013 @ 11:32.

A female fluttered lowly by the bush with two males in the vicinity- I caught it and to my surprise, it feigned death. It was placed on the forest floor where it continued to feign death for a short moment before it flew off back to the canopy...30 Nov 2014 @ 12:51
