The Clipper, Parthenos sylvia lilacinus (Butler)

This rather large, magnificent butterfly is not uncommon around flowering bushes fringing the forest and villages in Raub and it has a rather lofty habit of settling at a certain height from the ground, making it difficult to photograph from a distance. It has a very uniquely marked wing pattern: zigzag of lines on its hindwings and patches of white spots on its forewings making it instanly recognisable from other nymphalids. It has an unusual stiff gliding flight giving it a rather jerky flight pattern but can be rapid on the wings once disturbed or when engaged in aerial dogfights with other males. Locally abundant.
